2. Gather the estate information

Next, the focus is on identifying and valuing the assets in the estate as at the date of death. This usually includes bank accounts, investments, property, vehicles, and other significant items.

Most banks and financial providers now have online bereavement notification forms, which allow you to notify them of the death and request the information needed for the estate.
In some cases, it may still be necessary to write directly to a provider or complete a paper form — I’ll let you know what applies and help you with wording where needed.

For certain assets:

Vehicle values can usually be obtained online
Property values can often be estimated using online tools such as Zoopla, or by obtaining a formal valuation where required
Other assets and balances are normally confirmed by the provider once they have been notified of the death

3. Apply for Scottish Probate

I’ll prepare the necessary court forms for you and explain exactly how the application is submitted. I’ll also advise whether any inheritance tax forms are required before the application can be lodged.

Once the estate information has been gathered, you’ll provide me with the relevant details, including:

balances on bank and savings accounts
details of any investments
a copy title sheet for any property
a copy of the Will
up-to-date details of all executors (where there is more than one)

If you’re unsure how to obtain any of this, I can advise you or request the information on your behalf.

Using this information, I will complete the C1 form (the application for Confirmation) and repare the supporting paperwork for the Sheriff Court.

I’ll then provide you with clear, step-by-step guidance on how to submit the application, including a covering letter and details of where and how it should be sent.
